THE BRIDGE: HOW TO CLOSE THE GENDER DIVIDE AT WORK
We live in a time of great change, with the #metoo movement impacting us all a year on. It is at once a time of great hope, openness and change for both genders, but with change also comes insecurity, uncertainty and a recalibration of all the ‘rules’ we have taken as read.
While women have gained a stronger public position through the movement, they have also become somewhat estranged from their male colleagues, who fear putting a foot wrong.
Recent research from two online surveys, one by the Lean In Foundation and the other by Survey Monkey, found ‘that almost half of male managers were uncomfortable engaging in one or more common work activities with women, such as working one-on-one or socializing. One in six male managers was uncomfortable mentoring a female colleague in the post #metoo era. So are women’s barriers to success greater post #metoo?
The majority of men seem to agree that a shift in gender roles needs to happen. New research conducted by The Book of Man found 2/3 of men found male stereotypes were damaging and over half thought that the definition of masculinity needs to change. So where do we start?
To cut through all the hype, we want to bring it back to the truth - her truth, his truth. We sparked discussion with anonymous ‘truths’ from the women and men of our industry - including yours. The Bridge was an evening of provocation, conversation and the uniting of our divides.

This event is part of Bloom's 2019 programme of "Naked Truths". The real barriers to women achieving their potential are often the unspoken ones. We believe that there is a need to give women a platform to speak up and that these real voices will raise awareness of the industry’s Naked Truths impeding women from realising their aspirations.
The Book of Man is a new support network for men which aims to tackle the issues that aren’t better left unsaid. At thebookofman.com, they tackle areas such as mental health, emotions, relationships, fatherhood in a real way to challenge old school toxicity and create a New Masculinity.
All profits from Bloom's Panel events go to our charity partner Women's Aid, along with raffle proceeds (tickets can be bought on the night or in advance).
