How young girls can get an insight into an advertising career with Bloom and BelEve

In Summer 2018, Bloom and BelEve hosted a workshop to help give young girls an insight into careers in the communications industry. BelEve is a charity for girls working with 8 to 18 year olds; they help inspire and empower girls and young women to maximize their potential and celebrate their achievements. One year on from the workshop, Marsha Powell (Director at BelEve) shares with us insights from two of the attendees on how they found the experience.

2019's Bloom x BelEve workshop will be held on Thursday 30th August at Kinetic. Find out how you can help support BelEve at beleveuk.org/ or @beleveuk

Our mission at BelEve working with girls from 8-18 is to create the next generation of female leaders by equipping them with the right support, skills and confidence needed to improve their social and economic outcomes. With the summer holidays in full swing, we can’t believe that one whole year has passed since the BelEve team partnered up with the women of Bloom to give 30 girls between the age of 14- 18 the amazing opportunity to experience a day in
the life of some of the leading women in the communications industries. As we gear up to welcome another 30 girls onto this year’s workshops, We thought it would be great to catch up with 2 of last year’s attendees to find out what they’ve been up to and the impact the workshop had on them.

What two things did you take away from the workshop last year? And how have they helped you?
I’d say the two most prominent things I took away from the session were presentation skills and working with others to form a bigger picture and idea. In this I learned to adapt and work with other people’s ideas as well as making my own ideas work.

What skills did you gain from attending your work experience placement with Virgin?
From my work experience at Virgin, I learned a lot. One thing I thoroughly enjoyed was creating a channel review for the company and pitching it to them. This really brought me out of my comfort zone but at the same time, it allowed me to showcase my skills that I had. I think one prominent thing I learned was how to promote a business using social media, effectively. This was very helpful for me as this is something I am looking at.

1 year on what would you say to another girl thinking of attending the marketing workshop?
For another girl attending the workshop I’d say: Get the most out of this opportunity as this may be the start of an amazing journey. Even if you feel like there are others who are more
confident than you, remember we are all unique and if we allow it, our talents will shine through.

What two things did you take away from the workshop last year? And how have they helped you?
Last August I attended my first Bloom and BelEve workshop, where I not only made new friendships, but I also networked with those in the marketing and communications industry. I also gained presentation skills, a boost in confidence and ultimately a deep understanding into the dynamic world of marketing and communications, which was elevated by my work experience placement at Kinetic, PHD Media and Warner Brothers.

What skills did you gain from attending your work experience placement?
From attending my work experience placement, I gained insight knowledge into how advertising and communications companies are run, these including Kinetic, PHD Media and Warner Brothers. Over the week, I contributed to group meetings as well as digital publicity and PR pitches involving DC's latest superhero movie Shazam. Moreover, the Kinetic team also helped in enhancing and refining my CV. As a result of my work experience, I have acquired many connections as and a massive boost in confidence, I am extremely optimistic about my future steps and will be starting University in September to study Business Management with Marketing at Pearson Business School.

1 year on what would you say to another girl thinking of attending the marketing workshop?
Say yes to opportunities! This day was one of the highlights of my summer and consequently, I have gained so many skills and connections from it! You never know what will come from
attending events and who you may meet, so my advice is always say yes and have an optimistic outlook.
